Collection Counters Needed

Because of the forthcoming bank closure in Elmvale, we will be changing our banking procedures for the parish and cemetery accounts. As soon as word is given from the Accounting & Finance department at the Chancery office at the Archdiocese, the Sunday offertory collection will no longer be counted on Sundays at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Counting of the collection will be done on Tuesday mornings at 10am in the rectory. Because of the change, we will be losing some people who are counting for us now. More volunteers are needed and soon. If you can volunteer about an hour of your time once every six weeks or so, depending on how many volunteers come forward, please let Fr. Jim or Judy Murray know as soon as possible.

Sleeping Children Around the World ( SCAW ) – Up to Easter Sunday

SCAW is a registered Canadian charity whose mission is “to give bed kits to needy children in developing countries thus helping them to face the challenges of the coming day.” A donation of $35 buys one bed kit consisting of 15 to 20 items including a mat or mattress, pillow, sheets, blanket, mosquito net if applicable, clothing, school supplies and other items depending upon local needs. 100% of the bed kit donation goes towards the bed kit items. When you buy a full bed kit you will receive an income tax receipt from SCAW, as well as a picture of the child you have helped. Cheques or cash gratefully accepted. Cheques should be made payable to “Sleeping Children Around the World.”  Donations may be given to Judy Murray (32-2116) or placed in an envelope labelled SCAW and put into the Sunday collection basket. Be sure to include your name and full mailing address with your donation.

Donations will be accepted until Easter Sunday. What a terrific way to reach out to those less fortunate during Lent. Jesus said “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me. “

Canada Summer Jobs Program – Reach Out to your Member of Parliament

The federal government has introduced new requirements for employers applying for the Canada Summer Jobs grant. To be eligible for funding, employers must attest that both the job and the organization’s core mandate respect certain ‘values’ as determined by the federal government, including the government’s position on abortion, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Organizations unable or unwilling to make this attestation in whole or in part will be deemed ineligible for the grant.

Many Catholic organizations throughout the Archdiocese of Toronto, and many other faiths involved in charitable activity, at soup kitchens, shelters, refugee welcome centres or summer camps are impacted by this decision. Please take a moment to visit for more information and to find a template letter to send to your MP and the minister responsible for this portfolio.
